  2. What's different about Eliciting Requirements on BI projects versus other types of projects?
  3. What types of different documentation do we need for BI and how different is it compared to the normal documentation that I do?
  4. How different is the Business Intelligence Requirements Analysis course compared to other Requirement Analysis classes?
  5. If I know how to do entity relationship modeling, can I use it for BI Requirements? Or is there a different type of modeling that I'd need to use?

1. What is Business Intelligence?
Business Intelligence (BI) is defined as business insights that are based on data and the technology and processes used to obtain those insights. Business decisions that are based on data can help a business be more successful.

2. What's different about Eliciting Requirements on BI projects versus other types of projects?
There is a great deal of focus on data, data quality, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), and historical data in BI projects. Also, there are many styles of BI and you must elicit information about the characteristics of BI that are needed by the business.

3. What types of different documentation do we need for BI and how different is it compared to the normal documentation that I do?
You will need to do the same documentation you normally do on other types of projects, but you will also need to document the information for an additional kind of data model (dimensional model) to identify the BI data. You will also need to probe into additional needs around the characteristics of BI that are needed by the business.

4. How different is the Business Intelligence Requirements Analysis course compared to other Requirement Analysis classes?
This class assumes the participant has some experience with Requirements for a typical project (although there is some basics review, so a beginner won’t get lost) and focuses more on all the types of requirements that must be elicited for a project that involves a BI solution.

5. If I know how to do entity relationship modeling, can I use it for BI Requirements? Or is there a different type of modeling that I'd need to use?
Entity relationship modeling will still be useful on BI projects to help the analyst understand and describe operational data that is available and that is required in addition to the currently available data. However, there is an additional modeling structure that is specific to BI data called Dimensional Modeling that helps you understand and describe the data that will be needed for BI. There are two types of Dimensional Models called the Star Schema and the Snowflake Schema.

6. What are some keys to success for BI Projects
Some of the keys to success for BI projects are to define the right success criteria for the area of the business to be supported by BI, identify the right data needed to assess that success criteria, supply insights that will allow the business to answer the right questions, and present those insights in a way that makes it easy to shed light on what the business needs to know. In addition, to be successful, the data presented must be accurate, timely (presented while there is still time to respond to the insights), high value (something the business needs to know about), and actionable (something the business can do something about).

7. What are some benefits of taking the Business Intelligence Requirement Analysis class?
The participants will learn what is needed to elicit and analyze effective BI requirements. Some of the topics include what BI is and how it has evolved into a valuable tool for the business to support success, what makes BI challenging, how to overcome typical mistakes, what needs to be discovered to make BI requirements successful, and techniques and questions to help elicit requirements for BI projects. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice eliciting BI requirements using a case study after each lesson.
