(from PMI.org)
Knowing your earning potential is an invaluable asset when you want to leverage opportunities in your current job, invest in skills to raise your marketability and plan the next phase of your career. It's also critical for organizations that are competing for top talent as the demand for project managers grows.
PMI's latest project management salary survey shows that despite the global recession, for 51 percent of respondents, salaries are increasing. The median salary across all countries, roles, and experience levels is $90,260.
PMP® Credential Status Has Positive Impact on Earnings
The survey showed that the Project Management Professional® (PMP®) credential has a positive impact on annual salary, a finding that varies by country.
In six major countries—Australia, France, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States—salaries are at least $10,000 greater for PMP® credential holders than for those who don't have the credential.
The cumulative difference in salary over a number of years can exceed $100,000. For instance, in the United States, the cumulative difference between the earnings of PMP® credential holders and those without the PMP® credential is more than $102,000 during the time period between their third year of experience in project management (when one can first get the credential) and their 15th year (when experience starts to have a greater impact).
Background on Survey
Created and conducted by PMI's market research team, the PMI Project Management Salary Survey—Sixth Edition measures salaries across eight major position description levels in 19 countries. The latest survey, conducted in 2009, reflects a greatly increased sample size for more accurate results, based on self-reported data from nearly 35,000 project management professionals around the world.
Represented countries include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Some of the information found in the survey includes:
- The country with the highest median salary ($116,625) is Australia
- Sizes of projects (in terms of number of team members and average project budget) positively correlate with annual salary
- Salary correlates with the number of years a respondent has worked within the profession. In some countries, the salary difference from least- to most-experienced practitioner is dramatic.
The full report of the salary survey features:
- Cross-tabulations of salary data by eight positions and 13 demographic variables
- Reported salary increases over the past year
- Expected salary increases for the next year
- Information on benefit packages, work environments and available global project management career paths
The salary survey country reports feature the same information as the full report for each of the countries listed above. Both the full report and the country reports are available for sale in PMI's Marketplace.

Watermark Learning Announces New Agile Methods
Course
Minneapolis, MN—Agile processes
have joined the mainstream of software development approaches
according to a Forrester Research report released last
month. In response, Watermark Learning has created
a new three day course which provides a solid foundation
in agile methods.
Developed for all project team members, including Business
Analysts, Project Managers, Software Testers and Developers,
Agile Fundamentals builds the students’ knowledge and
skills in the agile approach to defining, estimating, and
prioritizing requirements, as well as in planning releases
and iterations. Using Scrum as a reference, attendees learn
how to build a Product Backlog, estimate sprints, write user
stories, use burndown charts, and complete reviews and retrospectives.
Co-Principal and CEO of Watermark Learning, Elizabeth Larson,
CBAP, PMP, says, “With more and more of our clients
adopting agile methods, we felt it was important to respond
to their needs with a hands-on, comprehensive course that
offered practical and realistic case studies.”
An awareness of Agile and Business Analysis methods is helpful
but not required for this class. This course can also be
taught on-site for a project team.
Watermark Learning Releases CBAP® Online
Study Exam
Minneapolis,
MN—Watermark Learning, Inc. released their
CBAP® Online Study Exam on February 15 of this year. This
three-in-one study aid has over 700 realistic exam questions
and adapts with students as they progress in their studies.
“We are extremely pleased with the depth and breadth
of the practice exam system we created to help CBAP® candidates,” said
Watermark Learning President Richard Larson. “Our system
has more features and flexibility than any other exam simulation
on the market. And, our extensive question feedback and BABOK® references
will help people better prepare and focus their valuable
study time,” he added.
For students just beginning their preparations, a warm-up
section helps ease anxiety, a common problem for many exam-takers. The
drill section allows the exam-taker to focus on one or more
Knowledge Area of the BABO®K at a time, with detailed answers
and BABOK® reference numbers provided for each question. Once
the student is ready, the exam simulator gives them a chance
to take a full, realistic exam to see where their areas of
weakness are. Simulation questions are randomized according
to the CBAP® exam question blueprint provided by the
IIBA® (International Institute of Business Analysis).
“The drill section is critical for me because I can
learn one chapter at a time and then review. The drills motivate
me to read the BABOK® chapters thoroughly,” said
Kathy Longar, CBAP® Certification Candidate.
The CBAP® Online Study Exam is the newest addition in a suite
of tools offered by Watermark Learning, which also includes
a CBAP® Preparation course and a best-selling
study guide.

knowledgebase and contribute to an Agile addendum to the

Focus on Sharing:
Mercy Corps
Did you notice the huge number of typhoons, tsunamis,
and earthquakes that have hit southeast Asia this year? Indonesia
in particular has been hit with several earthquakes this fall—the
latest on Oct. 23rd—with numerous casualties, building
damage, flooding, and other disruptions. The media didn't give
them much attention, but luckily Mercy Corps did.
Mercy Corps is a non-profit organization that
specializes in providing humanitarian aid and development
assistance. Since their founding in 1979, they have donated
nearly $2 billion (US dollars) in emergency and developmental
aid to over 16 million people in over 40 countries. Other
groups may donate more, but Mercy Corps is highly efficient
in how they operate. They are consistently rated as one of
Charity Navigator's
“Four Star” charities of choice.
For these and many other reasons, Watermark
Learning has donated a portion of its proceeds this fall
to Mercy Corps. Each year we donate 5% of our net earnings
to charitable organizations like Mercy Corps. If you'd like
to read more about the awesome work that Mercy Corps. does,
please visit their website.
