for Managing the Application Process
by Richard Larson, CBAP, PMP and
Elizabeth
Larson, CBAP, PMP
Are you interested in applying to become
a CBAP®? If you are like many business analysts who would
like to become certified, the exam is not the only major
hurdle.
This article is intended for anyone who
is contemplating applying for the CBAP® exam, but has
postponed it because of the application. IIBA® improved
its application submission process in March of 2009, but
the requirements are still strenuous. We layout the steps
in the application process to help candidates manage their
application, to be able to concentrate on studying to pass
the exam.

Managing e-Mails
by Shakeel Akhtar, PMP, WellPoint,
Inc.
Many of my colleagues who are very good
project managers have constantly complained about the number
of e-mails they receive per day. Due to the sheer
volume of the e-mails the inbox fills up pretty soon and
becomes unmanageable. To address this inbox issue
two behavioral traits have recently started to develop.
-
All e-mail is junk and so
if there is any important e-mail then someone will
call me and ask me to read it.
-
All e-mail needs
to at least be looked at immediately if not responded
immediately.
Both of these behavioral traits cause
loss of productivity. The first one causes the sender
of the e-mail to personally contact the receiver to read
the e-mail. A lot of time is lost if there is more
than one person who needs to be personally called and asked
to read the e-mail. The second trait causes people
to check and sometimes respond to their e-mails while in
meetings or while driving or when having dinner with family.
Checking and replying to e-mail as soon as it pops up in
the in-box is another form of interruption. This
trait causes loss of focus and ultimately causes loss of
productivity.
Both of these behavioral traits can be managed through training. There
are numerous training programs to address these issues. I have been guilty
of similar behavior myself last year but have now got a handle on my e-mail.
I close out every day with zero e-mails in my in-box. I have put together
a system to manage my e-mail and though it is not perfect, I am able to manage
my time far better than I used to do. |

The PMBOK Guide—A Great Resource,
but not a Methodology
by Andrea Brockmeier, PMP
Well, it's that time again—a new
release of the PMBOK has been unleashed. It's always a bit
frenzied when the PMBOK gets refreshed.
And, while the content changes are not necessarily titillating,
they're noteworthy to mention.
This article addresses the importance
of looking at the PMBOK Guide as resource rather than a methodology.
By changing your approach in how you use the guide will determine
how useful it will be to you.

PMP® Certification
Verification
As more and more project professionals
get certified, it sadly brings
out imposters who claim to be certified. Last month we published
the IIBA's link to check CBAP® credentials. Here's
a link to verify if someone is PMP® certified.
A word of caution: You
may have to try different forms of a candidate's name, depending
on how they applied to PMI. Likewise, if someone changed
their name, PMI may not have them listed the same as their
resume.
CBAP® Application
is Available
IIBA® has announced they have added
an online application to make it easier to apply for the
CBAP® exam. Visit the Application
page on the IIBA® website
for details.
