{"id":3977,"date":"2012-08-08T11:00:15","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T16:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/?p=3977"},"modified":"2022-08-04T10:00:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T15:00:03","slug":"project-management-olympic-gold-a-real-yawner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/project-management-olympic-gold-a-real-yawner\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Management Olympic Gold &#8211; A Real Yawner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3987\" title=\"Gold Medals\" src=\"https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Gold-Medals_iStock_000012270885XSmall-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Medals\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\">The Olympics are a fascinating phenomenon.&nbsp; Why does watching athletes, whose names we don\u2019t recognize, compete in sports we know nothing about become absolutely riveting?&nbsp; Synchronized diving \u2013 seriously?&nbsp; Would you even turn on the TV for that if it weren\u2019t the Olympics? &nbsp;Even if it were the only thing on?<\/p>\n<p>Then I got to thinking \u2013 what if project management got added to the list?&nbsp; If people can get excited about canoe slalom, what would it take to get people excited about competitive project management?<\/p>\n<p>How about snappy team outfits?&nbsp; Maybe not beach volleyball-style, but something to make it evident that the project team has arrived!<\/p>\n<p>Next, metrics. What will the scoring look like?&nbsp; A \u201c10\u201d for 100% attendance at meetings that start on time?&nbsp; A tenth of a point deduction for each missing attendee?&nbsp;&nbsp; How about scores for sponsor engagement?&nbsp; Let\u2019s say teams without a sponsor signature on a charter are disqualified.<\/p>\n<p>Then the commentary.&nbsp; Can you hear Bob Costas saying something like, \u201cThat American CPI is going to be tough for the Italians to beat given their sloppy tracking and ambiguous baselines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Probably not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As much of a stretch as that would be, there are similarities between Olympic athletes and good project managers.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Olympic gold medals and project success both come with lots of practice.&nbsp; It\u2019s not too many project managers who can likely claim project success on their first project.&nbsp; It takes repeated efforts and lots of learning from mistakes to execute a flawless pommel horse routine or a successful project.<\/p>\n<p>It also takes a team to win.&nbsp; Even in an event in which a single person competes, there\u2019s a team that includes a coach, parents and family, and the nation that cheers them on.&nbsp; Project managers on a project in which they are the only one assigned to the project still need sponsorship, subject matter experts, and the organization that stands to benefit from the project.<\/p>\n<p>And they both require taking risk.&nbsp; No one gets a gold medal hung around their neck without taking risks like opting for a more difficult routine or maneuver.&nbsp; Project managers partner with stakeholders to risk organizational resources on an outcome that is less-than-certain.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the drama, the flash, and the surprise (as little as there is these days) that characterize the Olympics are anathemas to sound project management practice.&nbsp; Actually, Eeyore, not Bob Costas, would be a more stylistically consistent commentator on any version of Olympic project management competition.&nbsp; \u201cTeam America wins the gold \u2013 zero variation from plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, we\u2019ll just have to leave all that exciting stuff to the Olympics athletes.&nbsp; The gold medal project management performances will continue to put you to sleep.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Olympics are a fascinating phenomenon.&nbsp; Why does watching athletes, whose names we don\u2019t recognize, compete in sports we know nothing about become absolutely riveting?&nbsp; Synchronized diving \u2013 seriously?&nbsp; Would you even turn on the TV for that if it weren\u2019t the Olympics? &nbsp;Even if it were the only thing on?
