{"id":9815,"date":"2020-07-15T14:32:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T19:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/?p=9815"},"modified":"2020-11-23T13:39:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T19:39:51","slug":"how-to-speak-ba-a-peek-inside-the-babok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/how-to-speak-ba-a-peek-inside-the-babok\/","title":{"rendered":"How to \u201cSpeak BA\u201d: A Peek Inside the BABOK\u00ae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the perhaps most frustrating aspects of studying for one of IIBA\u2019s (International Institute of Business Analysis) core certification exams (ECBA\u2122, CCBA\u00ae, CBAP\u00ae), is learning the lingo or terminology utilized within the practice framework. Remember, the BABOK\u00ae reflects an international framework created by BA thought leaders\/professionals around the world so the terms are used \u201csomewhere\u201d by \u201csomeone!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this blog is to acquaint you with the structure of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK\u00ae) and reinforce the need to \u201cget inside IIBA\u2019s head\u201d and see the world as IIBA sees the world of business analysis. Aligning with IIBA\u2019s paradigm (which includes terminology) is key to studying for and passing the exam.<\/p>\n<p>Business Analysts who are IIBA credential holders can successfully communicate with each other. For example, I asked a BA in Italy (the organization had off-shored some development work) about their risk approach regarding a high-impact risk that had been identified. That BA knew right away that I was asking for what you (or other frameworks) might call a \u201crisk response strategy.\u201d I queried another BA in India for which requirements attributes he thought it best to collect and he understood immediately that I was referring to 10 valuable pieces of information regarding requirements that IIBA offers for consideration. And, my personal pet peeve, is that many BAs refer to ALL requirements as \u201cbusiness requirements.\u201d IIBA and PMI (Project Management Institute) agree on the FIVE categories of requirements (PMI throws in two more for good measure that are more project-oriented). As an IIBA credential holder, when I elicit \u201cbusiness requirements\u201d I\u2019m looking for business goals, objectives, and outcomes. I know that business requirements along with the \u201cNeed\u201d (business problem or opportunity) become the BA\u2019s \u201cnorth star\u201d in that it guides all business analysis activity.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s first look at the structure of the BABOK\u00ae which is, by all accounts, a real page-turner. NOT! It\u2019s really dry (as most frameworks are). I have students that attest that reading the BABOK\u00ae is their \u201cgo-to\u201d cure for insomnia.<\/p>\n<p>The BABOK has eleven chapters:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Introduction<\/li>\n<li>Key Concepts<\/li>\n<li>Business Analysis Planning &amp; Monitoring*<\/li>\n<li>Elicitation and Collaboration*<\/li>\n<li>Requirements Life Cycle Management*<\/li>\n<li>Strategy Analysis*<\/li>\n<li>Requirements Analysis and Design Definition*<\/li>\n<li>Solution Evaluation*<\/li>\n<li>Underlying Competencies<\/li>\n<li>Techniques<\/li>\n<li>Perspectives<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>*Knowledge Area (KA)<\/p>\n<p>Each KA contains tasks and each task has (a):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose<\/li>\n<li>Description<\/li>\n<li>Inputs<\/li>\n<li>Elements<\/li>\n<li>Guidelines and Tools<\/li>\n<li>Techniques<\/li>\n<li>Stakeholders<\/li>\n<li>Outputs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the way, there are 30 tasks.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s an \u201celement\u201d you ask? Great question! Elements are key concepts associated with the task; I personally call them \u201cconsiderations.\u201d They can be process steps, tools, characteristics of the task; in other words, \u201cstuff to consider\u201d when performing that task. Just to make things more fun, elements can belong to more than one task but mean different things given the specific task.<\/p>\n<p>The BABOK\u00ae also defines 11 different types of stakeholders who the business analyst may engage while performing the tasks (Business Analyst, oddly enough, is one of the eleven!).<\/p>\n<p>The entire content of the BABOK\u00ae is fair game for the exam (which is the focus of the next blog). In short, passing the CCBA\u00ae and CBAP\u00ae exams are dependent upon the test-taker\u2019s ability to apply the knowledge to scenarios and case studies. It\u2019s not enough to just regurgitate information; the emphasis is on applying the information. To that end, it\u2019s important to understand the terminology so \u201cwords\u201d don\u2019t act as an impediment to and potentially threaten your success! Note: The ECBA\u2122 exam is knowledge-based.<\/p>\n<p>I want to take a moment and call out the Business Analysis Core Concept Model\u2122 (BACCM\u2122). The BACCM\u2122 consists of six terms that have a common meaning to all business analysts (BAs). These concepts help BAs discuss business analysis approaches and activities in general in along with the relationships between the six concepts (using common terminology). The six concepts are listed below with their generic definitions; the definitions are \u201ccustomized\u201d for and within each Knowledge Area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9863 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-510x305.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-510x305.png 510w, https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-1024x612.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-768x459.png 768w, https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-1536x918.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1-500x300.png 500w, https:\/\/www.watermarklearning.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How-to-Speak-BA-1.png 1999w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The BABOK\u00ae also differentiates between requirements and designs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A requirement is a \u201cusable representation of a need.\u201d Do you remember the definition of a \u201cneed?\u201d See, you\u2019re already connecting the dots!<\/li>\n<li>A design is a \u201cusable representation of a solution\u201d and focuses on understanding how value will be realized IF the solution is built. A design also helps the BA confirm and elicit more requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also worthy of note: There is only ONE \u201cplan\u201d that is listed as an output; typically, plans are called \u201capproaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the BABOK\u00ae is jam-packed with the terminology the certification candidate will need to get under their belt! Language both reflects and shapes reality so understanding the terminology will help the exam candidate get into IIBA\u2019s head!<\/p>\n<p>The former principals of Watermark Learning, Elizabeth and Richard Larson, authored a desk reference entitled, \u201cHow to Talk BA\u201d which is available from Watermark Learning and most other book distributors.
