2013 Trends in Business Analysis and Project Management
By Andrea Brockmeier, PMP, Elizabeth Larson, PMP, CBAP, CSM,
And Richard Larson, PMP, CBAP
The close of one year tends to make one reflect on what has occurred in the past year and ponder the future. Here we ponder some trends in the Project Management and Business Analysis fields for 2013. This year we want to concentrate on trends for 2013 relating to an emphasis on competencies.
Notice Everything for Greater Success
By Bob Prentiss, CBAP
So we have all heard of the saying "the devil is in the details", right? But what does it really mean? This idiom actually derives from an earlier phrase "God is in the detail" which expresses the idea that whatever you do should be done thoroughly; i.e. details are very important. When it comes to business analysis that could not be a more true statement. Missed details = missed requirements = missed functionality = less value to the business. It all makes sense on the surface, but how does one actually ensure that details are not missed?
Courage in Being the Second Mouse
By Richard Larson, PMP, CBAP
I read a funny quote the other day, actually a list of Paraprosdokians that my friend Hal Korff sent. (Thanks, Hal.) It goes like this:
"The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese."
It's a funny line, but I got to thinking about the subject of courage, a topic that has been on my mind lately. After finishing our book The Influencing Formula, I find myself spotting frequent examples of the formula, or parts of it, namely [trust + preparation * courage]. It's not a mathematical formula, for sure, so please don't try and do any algebra with it!
With a new year comes new learning opportunities. Whether you wait to earn PDUs or CDUs, learn about a specific and relevant topic, or both, we have you covered! Here are the topics coming up in the first few months of 2013. Here is our last 2012 webinar and the first on our 2013 schedule:
- January 18: Offsite and On Board: Getting Real Results from Virtual Teams presented by Andrea Brockmeier, PMP
- February 8: The Audacity of Quality Requirements presented by Bob Prentiss, CBAP
- March 15: Managing Requirements presented by Elizabeth Larson, CBAP, PMP, CSM
Our December webinar, "Seven Ways to Build Trust for Successful Requirements Elicitation," presented by Elizabeth Larson, was attended by over 350 professionals from both the BA and PM communities. If you weren't able to attend, don't worry - we also provide recordings of all webinars for our members' use.
"I just wanted to say thanks for a really useful class yesterday! I began a new job this year as an SBA and had not even considered tracking hours for future certification, so this webinar was extremely helpful and made me realize - I need a plan! Thank you!"
-Julie, Denver, CO

What's Done is Done, Not Just Complete
By Andrea Brockmeier, PMP
Last month, I was driving through a major highway construction project when my passenger commented how excited she was because she'd heard that the project was nearing completion and would be finished before year-end. I took a quick gander at the site and responded that I was sure whatever source she'd heard that from must have said the end of next year, not this year, because this project was clearly far from over.

Requirements Management Webinar Proves Timely for PMI Members
Elizabeth Larson's webinar presentation, I Don't Have Time to Manage Requirements - My Project is Late Already, was featured as an On Demand webinar on the PMI® website. The webinar is designed to clear up the confusion between managing the project and managing the requirements, and to provide a consultative approach to asking for the time to manage requirements.
PMI members can view the webinar here, and PMI also invites non-members to join the organization to take full advantage of these webinars and other perks of PMI membership.
Remember, Watermark Learning also offers online access to our own webinar recordings on our website. To view these recordings, you must register to become a Watermark Learning member -- it's free, and also includes access to additional online learning tools and offers!
Fifth Edition of PMBOK Guide Released
Watermark Co-Principal Elizabeth Larson is Major Contributor
Watermark Learning is proud of CEO Elizabeth Larson who was a key contributor to the PMBOK® Guide - Fifth Edition. As content lead for the Project Scope Management chapter, she helped clarify importance of requirements on projects and helped align the PMBOK with other industry standards. Congratulations Elizabeth!
This latest edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), was just released this week to help ring in the new year. It includes some things worth celebrating.
Notably, there is now a process that yields all components of the Project Management Plan. For example, nowhere in the Fourth Edition was the Schedule Management Plan specifically named as an output because there wasn't a process to create it. In the Fifth Edition, the process Plan Schedule Management has been added to the Time Management Knowledge Area, with the Schedule Management Plan as the output.
Secondly, all of the controlling processes are now named Control (Knowledge Area), so that, for example, Report Performance is now called Control Communications and Perform Quality Control is now called Control Quality.
The addition of a new Knowledge Area, Stakeholder Management, also cleans up the Communications Management Knowledge Area while at the same time highlighting the criticality of stakeholder engagement for project success.
Those are just some of the improvements in this latest edition of the standard. Aligning, harmonizing, and streamlining also characterize the totality of changes.
