Two Ways to Handle Scope Creep

by Elizabeth Larson, Principal, PMP, CBAP, CSM

and Richard Larson, PMP, CBAP

One of the greatest challenges we faced in our role as project managers is to manage scope creep. Our biggest lesson learned was that to be successful, we had to manage scope, and manage it in an effective way. (e.g. "you can't have that new feature-it's out of scope" didn't work). This article presents two common causes of scope creep and what to do about them in the form of findings and recommendations. We have included the perspectives of the sponsor, project manager (PM), and the business analyst (BA).

areciboOn October 12, the giant radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, began to search for alien life, sending out signals seeking other occupied planets in space. Control Projects Not People

By Andrea Brockmeier, PMP

Controlling projects is a good thing. Controlling people is not. What does it mean to control projects, not people, and when have you crossed the threshold from controlling the project to micromanaging the people?

When you start telling people how to do their jobs instead of focusing on the results they create is usually an indication that you have stepped beyond the bounds of project control and into the realm of people control.

Sowing the Seeds of Love, Trust, and Potatoes

By Bob Prentiss, CBAP

As I was listening to the song "Sowing the Seeds of Love" by Tears for Fears the other day, I was first reminded that I truly am a child of the '80s (non-big hair movement mind you). It also reminded me that I need to keep sowing seeds. Sowing seeds (or as I usually call it "planting") is the concept that what you sow, you will reap; something that I think often gets forgotten. In this particular instance, it is more like what you sow, you will hopefully reap with the idea that if you plant a seed, what you want will eventually grow. It takes work, but it does not have to be hard. More about that when I get to the potato part of this article.

So why should you sow/plant seeds?
